Chinese School Prize Giving

This was held in December at the Mangere Community Hall. It was great to see the students of all ages from the very young ones to teenagers, each giving an item showing off what they had learned. It is heartening to see young Chinese New Zealanders learning Chinese and, through that, nurturing their cultural roots.

Stan King is doing a great job in co-ordinating the Mangere School and the new one at 1 New North Road. There is a dedicated band of teachers teaching Cantonese and Mandarin.

Connie and her lovely team of ladies put on a great morning tea.

Shanghai World Expo

On the invitation of the Consul-General, I attended the function to mark the 20 day countdown to the opening of the Shanghai World Expo. It looks like it will be a fantastic event. The Expo will be a wonderful showcase for all the nations taking part. New Zealand was given a choice position to build its pavilion. It is right next to the China pavilion and visitors going to that pavilion will pass the New Zealand one. The theme of the New Zealand pavilion is "Cities of Nature: Living between Land and Sky". It sounds amazing and one of its features will be a rooftop forest garden.

China Travel Service here in Auckland have a great deal going if you want to visit the Expo. For $1,699.00 you get return flights on Air New Zealand to Shanghai, three nights accommodation in a four start hotel and Expo admission.

The Cultural Bridge / The Artstation Gallery

Start date: 5 May 2010
End date: 15 May 2010
Title: The Cultural Bridge
Location: Artstation 1 Ponsonby Road, Newton, Auckland.
Venue: Artstation gallery
Time: Mon-Thurs 9am-7pm, Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 10am-4pm

Event Description:
The Cultural Bridge focuses on the changing influence that living in New Zealand has had on three senior Chinese artists.

Husband and wife artists, Bang Zhen Deng and Lu Bo have been living and practising in New Zealand since 1992. While artist An Chang Tan immigrated here in 1999.

"At first the artists didn't realise that their art work had changed but their friends in China were quick to comment on the change. Both painters have changed their colour palette since coming to New Zealand. Mr Deng and Mr Tan's paintings from New Zealand are more colourful that the ones they painted in China", says curator, Jade Min.

An Chang Tan has enjoyed learning from artists from different cultural backgrounds since coming to New Zealand.

The sculptor of the trio, Lu Bo found that potters in New Zealand commonly use more traditional techniques than in China. These techniques ironically help her to create very traditional Chinese pottery.

This exhibition will include Mr Deng's painting Memories of Otago, which won the 2009 Waitakere Trust Art Award.

"My portraits are accepted more by New Zealanders, they are open to respecting an artist's work," says Mr Deng.

Entry is FREE

Double Star Mandarin Bilingual Playgroup

Have your child effortlessly learn Mandarin as a second language at the Double Star (Shuang Xing)Playgroup. Mandarin songs, stories and games are combined with structured lessons to make learning Chinese fun and sociable for children of all backgrounds and with different levels of language proficiency.

A bilingual immersion playgroup is the best start you can give your child when developing a second language. Babies are born with the ability to istinguish all the possible sounds of the world's languages,but when they do not hear the tones of other languages around them, they will lose their ability to retain
them.

In addition to gaining access to the world's most widely spoken language, your child will also benefit from the advantages of bilingualism, such as:

* Learning about Chinese culture and way of life
* Building a stronger sense of identity and heritage
* Being able to think more flexibly and creatively
* Enhancing communication and social skills
* Setting the foundation to learning more languages
